How Does the Online GST Calculator Work?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India is a unified, destination-based indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. Whether you are a business owner generating a sales bill, a freelance consultant issuing an invoice, or an end-consumer verifying the tax on a retail purchase, calculating accurate GST amounts is critical.
Our Free All-in-One GST Calculator supports both primary calculation methods recognized under the Indian tax framework:
- GST Exclusive (Add GST): Use this when you have the net cost or manufacturing price of a product and need to add GST to determine the final selling price or bill amount.
- GST Inclusive / Reverse GST (Extract GST): Use this when you have the MRP or final gross bill and need to determine the original pre-tax base cost and the exact GST amount paid.
GST Calculation Formulas Explained (With Practical Examples)
Understanding the mathematical formula behind GST ensures complete transparency when verifying vendor invoices or preparing financial statements.
1. Formula for Adding GST (Exclusive GST Calculation)
When GST is to be calculated over and above the base product price:
Final Invoice Amount = Base Price + GST Amount
Example: Suppose you sell IT hardware consulting services for ₹10,000 with an applicable GST slab of 18%:
• GST Amount = (₹10,000 × 18) ÷ 100 = ₹1,800
• Final Invoice Total = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800
• For an Intra-State transaction, this splits into CGST (9%) = ₹900 and SGST (9%) = ₹900.
2. Formula for Removing GST (Inclusive / Reverse GST Calculation)
When you purchase an item sold at an all-inclusive retail MRP and wish to extract the base value:
GST Amount = Total MRP − Original Base Price
Example: Suppose you buy consumer electronics with an MRP of ₹11,800 (which already includes 18% GST):
• Base Price = (₹11,800 × 100) ÷ (100 + 18) = (₹11,80,000) ÷ 118 = ₹10,000
• GST Component = ₹11,800 − ₹10,000 = ₹1,800
Current GST Tax Slabs in India
Under Indian tax law, goods and services are categorized into five primary rate slabs according to their essentiality:
| GST Slab Rate | Category Description | Common Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 0% (Exempt) | Basic necessities & unbranded food items | Fresh vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, salt, unbranded flour, printed books. |
| 3% / 0.25% | Precious metals & polished stones | Gold jewellery, silver, precious ornaments (3%), cut and polished diamonds (0.25%). |
| 5% | Mass consumption items & essential services | Packaged foods, tea, coffee, edible oil, economy air transport, domestic LPG, footwear under ₹1,000. |
| 12% | Standard consumer goods & processed foods | Processed food, butter, cheese, frozen meat, mobile phones, umbrellas, business class air tickets. |
| 18% (Standard) | Most consumer goods, machinery & software services | Software licensing, IT services, enterprise accounting add-ons, capital goods, restaurants, mineral water. |
| 28% (Luxury) | Sin goods, luxury products & automobiles | Automobiles, motorcycles, aerated beverages, tobacco products, five-star hotel stays. |
Understanding CGST, SGST, UTGST, and IGST
Depending on whether the buyer and seller are located within the same state or across different states, GST is bifurcated into distinct components:
- Intra-State Transactions (Within the Same State): If a business in Delhi sells goods to a customer in Delhi, the GST is divided equally between the Central Government (CGST) and the State Government (SGST or UTGST in Union Territories). For instance, an 18% tax becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
- Inter-State Transactions (Between Different States): If a business in Maharashtra sells to a client in Gujarat, the entire tax is collected as IGST (Integrated GST) by the Central Government and subsequently distributed.
